KIT OVERVIEW

The things I have packed have been researched and procured over many years. There are 202 items in my backpack. As I set out, it has a base weight of 12kg. With food and water, it is 15kg.

I know this is heavy, and many a walking friend will gasp and shout "JUST CUT STUFF OUT!" Perhaps I will shed a few things along the way. But, as I imagine the year ahead, I believe that each item is essential for helping me achieve my low-impact goals. I don't want to find I suddenly need something on the road, and have to make an unethical emergency purchase that I could have avoided. Some of the items I have packed I will need very intermittently, like ear buds, and my JetBoil CrunchIt device for puncturing gas canisters and rendering them curb-side recyclable! Everything in my backpack will play a part in my being light-footed.

I have spent a lot of money on kit, but it was hugely important to me that I invest in quality. Firstly, I want kit that will last. There is a lot of nasty stuff out there that performs very badly, stops functioning very quickly, gets disposed of after only a few uses, and is generally a waste of the world's resources. Secondly, I want to give my money to good companies, who love what they make. I want them to keep innovating their processes and materials, and I want my purchase to help them in their business aims and to reach their sustainability targets.
