THE PACKAGING GALLERY
A NOTE FROM
THE PATRON
Welcome to the Packaging Gallery, where packaging of all shapes and sizes is celebrated and then scrutinised. For many years, I was an avid collector of packaging. A guilty squirrel, I'd hoard it away in various 'art boxes' for future craft projects. But it wasn't just any packaging - nothing dull and easily recyclable, like an egg box. The kind of packaging I had the magpie's eye for was generally bathroom-related and fell into two categories.
Category 1: am item with many different, generally inseparable materials. E.g. a tiny glass bottle, with an irremovable rubber dripper and plastic seal, for example.
Category 2: Anything that I didn't trust would be properly recycled. E.g. plastic wrappers around period pads, the spongy disk in the lid of a face cream jar, elastic bands. I didn't have the heart to condemn them landfill, so they were allowed to stay with me, safe under a bed.
Now and again, when I went travelling or overseas to work, my parents would raid my packaging stores and thin them out. These serial crimes have still not seen justice. So, as someone with a packaging obsession, it is only natural that I have hoarded and recorded as much of the packaging associated with my walk as possible. I hand over to The Fitzplasticks to curate the exhibition.
